Photo Challenge Week 13: Water

The best part about doing your own weekly photo challenge is having the flexibility to change themes based on your own circumstances. Laughter just wasn’t in the cards for me this week, so I diverted to water for this week’s subject. There is a lot of water right now with the spring run off. Let’s take a visit along the Rideau River.

First up is the calmer section of the river near the LRT crossing. Crews had already broken up the ice a few weeks ago. This week smaller chunks of ice were flowing as the river started to edge closer to overflowing its banks. At this particular location, there is usually a steep embankment down to the water. But during the spring run off, the embankment shrinks with the sheer volume of water. The water is very calming in this section, and the jagged bits of ice were floating by, slowly shrinking under the heat of the sun.

Second up is Hogs Back Falls, a spectacular site to see the power of water. On the western side of the falls, snow and ice were still clinging to the rock walls. I’m always amazed to see how the water finds it way down around the rocks changing directions and colliding to form the mist that hangs in the air.

Hopefully next week I will be back on track for Spring!
